What Is a Hangover?
A hangover is characterized by the constellation of unpleasant physical and mental symptoms that occur after a bout of heavy alcohol drinking. Physical symptoms of a hangover include fatigue, eadache, increased sensitivity to light and sound, redness of the eyes, muscle aches, and thirst. Signs of increased sympathetic nervous system activity can accompany a hangover including increased systolic blood pressure, rapid heartbeat (i.e., tachycardia), tremor, and sweating. Mental symptoms include dizziness, a sense of the oom spinning (i.e., vertigo), and possible cognitive and ood disturbances such as depression, anxiety, and irritability. The particular set of symptoms experienced and their intensity may vary from person to person and from occasion to occasion. In addition, hangover characteristics may depend on the type of alcoholic beverage consumed and the amount a person drinks. Typically, a hangover begins within several hours after he cessation of drinking, when a person’s blood alcohol concentration (BAC) is falling. Symptoms usually peak about the time BAC is zero and may continue for up to 24 hours thereafter.
Symptoms of Hangover
There are many symptoms of a hangover including fatigue, weakness, thirst, headache and muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, decreased sleep and increased slow-wave sleep, vertigo, sensitivity to light and sound, decreased attention and concentration, depression, anxiety, irritability, tremors, sweating, and increased pulse and systolic blood pressure.
Treatments for Hangover
Many treatments are described to prevent hangover, shorten its duration, and reduce the severity of its symptoms, including innumerable folk remedies and recommendations. Conservative management offers the best course of treatment. Time is the most important component, because hangover symptoms will usually abate over 8 to 24 hours.
INDIVIDUAL INGREDIENT FUNCTIONS
Vitamin B1 (Thiamin)
Vitamin B1, also called thiamine, is one of eight watersoluble B vitamins. Vitamin B1 is essential for the normal functioning of the nervous system, muscles, and heart. It also stabilizes the appetite and promotes growth along with good muscle tone. Similar to some other B complex vitamins, thiamine is sometimes referred to as an "anti-stress" vitamin because it is thought to enhance the activity of the immune system and improve the body's ability to withstand stressful conditions.
Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin)
Vitamin B2, also called riboflavin, is one of eight watersoluble B vitamins. In addition to producing energy for the body, riboflavin also works as an antioxidant which means it helps the body deal with unstable chemicals called free radicals. Free radicals are produced by the body when food is converted into energy and will build up in the body over time. They increase the potential for damage to the body cells (a process called oxidative stress), which is associated with the aging process and a general decline in the central nervous system and the immune system.
Vitamin B3 (Niacin)
Vitamin B3, also called niacin, is one of eight watersoluble B vitamins. Niacin plays an important role in removing toxic and harmful chemicals from the body. It also helps the body make various sex and stress-related hormones in the adrenal glands and other parts of the body. Niacin helps to maintain the central nervous system and is also effective in improving circulation and reducing cholesterol levels in the blood.
Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine)
Vitamin B6, also called pyridoxine, is important for the maintenance of the central nervous system and muscle cells. It aids the production of DNA and RNA, the body's genetic material, and assists the formation of antibodies in the immune system. It reduces muscle spasms, leg cramps, hand numbness, nausea, stiffness of hands, and promotes healthy skin.
VitaminB12 (Cobalamin)
Vitamin B12, also called cobalamin, is one of eight water-soluble B vitamins. Vitamin B12 is an important vitamin for maintaining healthy nerve cells and it aids in the production of DNA and RNA, the body's genetic material.
Water Soluble B Vitamins
The water soluble B vitamins are not stored in the body to any appreciable extent and must be replaced every day. Their influence on the body lasts for 14-18 hours after ingestion after which their potency decreases. Excessive intake of water-soluble vitamins is typically passed out through the urine. If your diet contains less than 50% RDA (recommended daily allowance) of water-soluble vitamins, deficiency symptoms may be displayed in as little as 4 weeks. All B vitamins, often referred to as B complex vitamins, assist and regulate carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism. These are essential mechanisms which produce energy for the body. They also contribute to hemoglobin synthesis and red blood cell production which carries oxygen around the body. Furthermore, B complex vitamins help maintain muscle tone along the wall of the digestive tract and promote healthy skin, hair, eyes, mouth, liver and nervous system.
Activated Charcoal
How Activated Charcoal Works
Activated charcoal exerts its effects by adsorption of a wide variety of drugs and chemicals. Adsorption is a process in which atoms and molecules move from a bulk phase (such as a solid, liquid, or gas) onto a solid or liquid surface. In other words, the toxic substance attaches to the surface of the charcoal. Because charcoal is not "digested," it stays inside the GI (gastrointestinal) tract and eliminates toxins that pass through. This mechanism of action should not be confused with absorption. Absorption occurs when a substance passes into or through a tissue, like water passing into a sponge. Once the chemical, drug, or alcohol has been absorbed by the GI tract, activated charcoal can no longer retrieve the toxic ingestion. It will only attach to substances that are still inside the stomach or intestines. The charcoal is "activated" because it is produced to have a very fine particle size. This increases the overall surface area and adsorptive capacity of the charcoal. It is produced by adding acid and steam to carbonaceous materials such as wood, coal, rye starch, or coconut shells. To put this in perspective, one standard 50-gram dose of activated charcoal has the surface area of 10 football fields. Activated charcoal does not irritate the mucous membranes of the GI system. In addition to adsorption of toxins, activated charcoal also adsorbs food nutrients, vitamins, and minerals. However, do not worry about this short-term effect when activated charcoal is used to treat poisoning.
American Ginseng Extract (Panax Ginseng)
The roots of American ginseng contain several saponins named ginsenosides that are believed to contribute to the adaptogenic properties. They are used in traditional Chinese medicine to improve stamina and combat fatigue and stress. Saponins are interesting natural compounds found in many plants, herbs, roots, and beans. Saponins have potential in the prevention and treatment of diseases of the heart and circulatory system. Saponins, for instance, inhibit the formation of lipid peroxides (fat oxidation) in cardiac muscle or in the liver, influence the function of enzymes contained in them, decrease blood coagulation from cholesterol, decrease sugar levels in blood, and stimulate the immune system. Some saponins may even have anti-tumor properties.
Sodium Bicarbonate
Sodium bicarbonate is an antacid that neutralizes stomach acid and is used to relieve heartburn and indigestion. Sodium bicarbonate is also used to make the blood and urine less acidic in certain conditions. Sodium Bicarbonate is a salt of sodium that neutralizes acids. Sodium bicarbonate is taken to treat stomach disorders, acidosis, and sodium deficiency.
